Completion Report: Construction of Jangthang Nyoma Public Guest Room (2024-25)

Project Overview

The Tibetan Jangthang Nyoma, located within the Sonamling Tibetan Settlement, identified a critical need for modern guest accommodations, particularly those equipped with western-style sanitation facilities. This need was formally presented to the Hon’ble Sikyong, Mr. Penpa Tsering, during his visit to Leh, highlighting the inadequacies of the existing facilities, which were over 20 years old.

Project Approval and Tendering

Following the request, the Department of Home, Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), approved and allocated the necessary budget for the project. The Sonamling Tibetan Settlement’s Project Committee subsequently issued a labor-based tender for the construction work.

Supervision and Completion

The sub-project committee appointed the Jangthang Nyoma group leader to oversee and supervise the construction process. Under his leadership and with the committed efforts of the project committee, the construction of the new western toilet and bathroom was successfully completed within the specified timeframe.

Purpose and Impact

The primary objective of this project was to create a source of income for the community, especially given the increasing number of tourists visiting the Jangthang area. A standardized guest room facility is essential for accommodating local dignitaries and other official delegates. This year, the Department of Home, CTA, also provided essential furniture and kitchen items to further enhance the facility.
