Introduction:

The Samyeling Tibetan Settlement, Majnu ka tilla [MT] is a colony in Delhi. It is located at the bank of Yamuna River. Today it is home to many second generation Tibetan refugees.  This settlement is headed by Samyeling Tibetan settlement office which is located opposite to the Tee Dee restaurant. The office was first established in 1984 and acts as bridge between the Tibetans in Delhi and the Department of Home, CTA. It is the principal office whose aim is to look after the overall affairs of Tibetans in and around Delhi.

Settlement location:

Samyeling Tibetan settlement is located at Majnu Ka Tila, Delhi, at the bank of Yamuna River. The average rainfall is 3 inch and the average temperature is 04-45° celsius. Delhi as a place is considered as one of the most polluted city in India. The weather here is extremely hot in the summer where one cannot live without cooling facilities as oppose to winter where it is foggy most of the time.

Settler’s livelihood:

The main sources of settler’s livelihood is business. Today there are several street vendors occupying permanent small space of pavement without permanent structure. The living standard of the settlers is accelerating day by day with the competitive range of business and their livelihood is self-reliance. Comparatively the economic condition is better than the majority Tibetan Settlement in India.

Administrative setup:

Tibetan Welfare Office at Delhi is the representative office of Department of Home, Central Tibetan Administration. It is serving as the liaison between the Tibetans in the region and the Department of Home, Central Tibetan Administration. It is the principle office to look after welfare and overall control of running of affairs of the Tibetans in the area. Daily task for the representative range from adjudicating disputes to communicating with group leaders and outside authorities, and generally watching over the running of all aspects of the settlement.

Local Assembly:

Like every other genuine democratic system the Tibetans in Delhi elect their own representative for better understanding of the problems with them. These elected members act as an intermediary with relevant authorities, pass on information, settle disputes and collect money. They can bring up the problems of the Tibetan people and raise the question on the working of the Tibetan Welfare Officer. These members are elected on the basis of their strength of personality and once ability to stand before the interest of their people.
