Introduction

Tashiling Tibetan Settlement was established in the year 1965 with a 188 Ropani of land procured from the then government of His majesty of Nepal by International Red Cross .Later the responsibility to protect and to look after the welfare of settlers is entrusted to Nepal Red Cross.

Settlement Location:

It is located at Chhorepatan, Pokhara Nepal which falls under Kaski District and its just 350 mtr away from the tourist spot i.e  Devisfall and Gupteshwor Cave. Average temperature at Tashiling ranges between 46 to 90 d Fahrenheit, and average rainfall is around 1.5 inches annually.

The Tashiling Handicraft Center was established as a means to generate income for the Tibetan settlers in year 1980.  It serves as a platform for showcasing and selling traditional Tibetan handicrafts, such as intricately woven carpets and other handmade items. This initiative not only supports the livelihood of the settlers but also helps preserve their cultural heritage through artistry.

The Photo Gallery, inaugurated on the 50th anniversary of the camp, offers a poignant visual narrative of the settlers’ journey. It chronicles their history, struggles, and resilience, celebrating five decades of community and cultural preservation. Together, these landmarks stand as testaments to the spirit of self-reliance and cultural pride within the Tashiling community.

Settlers Livelihood:

Most of Tashiling settlers, they do petty business and owns restaurant for living and others. It revolves around traditional handicrafts like carpet weaving, small businesses selling Tibetan goods. These activities sustain the community while preserving their cultural heritage and sustain good life.

Facilities in the settlement

  • Health Care: Our camp is facilitated with one health care worker(Nurse)and its primary services is the home visit program, where our nurse conducts vital health checks atevery household to ensure the well-being of settlers. The clinic also provides health awareness on emerging diseases, proper wound care and dressing, and other necessary facility for settlers comfort and recovery.
  • School and Education: SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, Pokhara was formally inaugurated on June 6, 1987, with initial 64 students. SOS HGS Pokhara has today grown into a full-fledged Secondary school from Kindergarten to Class 12 with 288 students in the current academic session.There are over 19 staffs including locals.In every class,theirs about 27 to 32 students with excellent school facilities incl. library, science lab, computer lab etc.
  • Monastery: Shree Dhargyaling Monastery, established in year 1983, is located within Tashiling Camp, Pokhara, and serves as an important spiritual center for the local community. The monastery is home to 34 monks followed by Master Tulku Rinpoche who uphold daily rituals, meditation, and Buddhist teachings. It provides a peaceful environment for reflection and spiritual growth. Known for its traditional Tibetan Buddhist architecture, with intricate murals and statues, Shree Dhargyeling plays a significant role in preserving the cultural and religious heritage of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery has become a cornerstone of the community, contributing to both the spiritual and cultural landscape of the area.

Administrative setup

The Settlement Officer appointed by Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) oversees the administration work of Tibetan settlement Office. They manage daily operations, handle documentation and legal matters, and ensure the welfare of residents. Under S.O, each camp has an elected camp leader.They work closely to implement development projects and allocate resources. Additionally, the officer serves as a liaison between the settlement and the CTA, monitors progress, resolves conflicts, and reports on the settlement’s status. Their role is essential in maintaining the settlement’s functioning and supporting the community’s development.

Group Leader(Chimi): The group leaders plays a vital role in supporting the Settlement Officer in the progress and development of the settlement. They help ensure the smooth running of the settlement by addressing conflicts, facilitating communication between the community and the administration, and ensuring that settlers concerns are heard. There are six group leaders in total. If any settlers faces issues, whether financial or other concerns, they can approach their respective group leader. The group leader then communicates these issues to the Settlement Officer for resolution. Through their efforts, group leaders contribute to the overall well-being and smooth operation of the community.

Nearest Airport: The Tashiling Camp Settlement is approximately 9 kilometers away from Pokhara International Airport (PKR). Traveling by road, this distance typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
