PROJECT DESCRIPTION & PROGRESS: – The construction of road retaining walls within the settlement became necessary after the severe storm earlier this year, which brought extremely heavy rainfall and triggered multiple landslides. These landslides damaged around sixteen locations in the Tibetan Bonpo Settlement of Dolanji. Among these, four critical areas required urgent attention, as the damage completely disrupted automobile traffic and even prevented pedestrians from using the roads.

Particularly affected were the areas near the settlement office and the nunnery monastery at Chandoli, Dolanji, along with two additional locations that were identified as priority sites requiring immediate intervention. Considering the urgency of restoring safe access and preventing further erosion or damage, the road retaining wall construction was initiated as an emergency project.

The construction work commenced on 26 December 2025 and, according to the agreement, was scheduled to be completed by 4 March 2026. The project has been carried out under the supervision of the settlement board members, with regular site inspections conducted by the office staff to ensure quality and timely progress.

The project was initiated and implemented in accordance with the plan and agreement established between the Tibetan Settlement Officer (Representative of CTRC) and the contractor Mr. Surender Prasad. Overall, the work has proceeded as planned and in line with the agreed project framework.

CONCLUSION: –

In conclusion, the construction of the road retaining walls at the Tibetan Bonpo Settlement, Dolanji, has been a highly important and beneficial project for the community. As described in the project overview, the heavy storm and intense rainfall earlier this year caused severe landslides that damaged several road sections and disrupted transportation and pedestrian access in the settlement. The implementation of this project has successfully addressed these urgent concerns.

The retaining walls constructed at the critical locations, including the areas near the settlement office and the nunnery monastery at Chandoli, have significantly improved the safety and stability of the roads. These structures help retain backfill and maintain the elevation difference between ground surfaces, thereby stabilizing both cut and fill slopes. This is especially essential in our mountainous region where landslides are common during the rainy and monsoon seasons.

With the completion of this project, the community can now travel more safely between Chandoli and the monastery area, even though the river separates the settlement into two sides. The road is now accessible for both pedestrians and vehicles, greatly reducing the risk of accidents and improving daily mobility for residents.

The successful completion of the project has brought great relief to the community by addressing one of its most pressing safety concerns. Residents closely followed the progress of the work from its beginning on 26 December 2025 until its completion, and they greatly appreciate the positive impact it has brought to the settlement.

We would like to express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to the Department of Home, CTA for their generous financial support and coordination in making this important project possible. Their support has played a vital role in ensuring that the Tibetan Bonpo Settlement remains a safe and secure place for the community.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Tsochok Tenzin (Mr.) Bonpo Settlement Officer
