The foundation was laid when the Third Pal Chokling Rinpoche purchased approximately 177 acres of tea garden land from Raja Ashoka Pal Singh of the Mandi royal family for the Tibetan community in Chauntra. In 1967, an additional 137 acres were acquired for the Tibetan community in Bir, and the land was officially registered under the Tibetan Khampa Industrial Society. In the early years, the primary sources of livelihood were tea garden labor, carpet weaving, and seasonal sweater selling.

Over the years, the tea garden and carpet weaving operations have ceased due to various challenges. However, the winter sweater selling business remains active. The overall economic and social conditions have significantly improved, thanks to the guidance and support of the Central Tibetan Administration and, most importantly, the blessings of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Today, many residents are engaged in small, medium, and large-scale businesses, while others have found employment across various professions in major Indian cities. The settlement also thrives with active community organizations, schools, and associations.

Settlement Location: The settlement is located in the scenic foothills of Himachal Pradesh, approximately 125 kilometers from Gaggal Airport and 160 kilometers from Pathankot Railway Station. It is 45 kilometers from Dharamsala, the residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The area enjoys a pleasant climate and is well-equipped with modern amenities.

514

Present Population

No of Villages in the settlement

Monasteries

The settlement is spiritually enriched by two major monasteries:

1.
